Practical Guidelines For Writing A Nursing Master's Thesis

I have the utmost respect for students who feel that nursing is their vocation. While a lot of students go into their chosen career thinking purely about their financial package and prospects for career progression, it takes a very special kind of person to want to be a nurse. I also know that a lot of student nurses feel incredibly frustrated because they just want to be “hands on” rather than stuck with the academic aspect of their course.

However, like it or not the only way that you are going to land a career in nursing is by first completing your master’s thesis. So, in case you are feeling a little out of your depth, here are my practical guidelines for writing a nursing Master’s thesis.

Do it early

A thesis is not the kind of thing that you can leave to the last minute and hope to sail through. It needs to be carefully honed, then refined. So, while you might get away with leaving your essay to the very last minute the same cannot be said for your thesis. I would suggest that you start writing it pretty much as soon as you are tasked with it. Let’s face it, it is not like you haven’t known that this was coming!

Walk through it in your head

By walking through your thesis in your head before you even sit down at your laptop you should identify potential hurdles. Doing it this way also eliminates the inevitable sense of panic that you feel when having to come up with something so significant.

Be clear on your argument

If your argument is not watertight then you will get ripped to shreds in terms of your overall mark. It has to be:

  • Carefully honed

  • Tight

  • Succinct

This is your chance to prove that your paper has merit. That it is as good as, possibly even better than all the other papers on the same subject.

Research, research, research

Research is not something that you can gloss over or skim. It is the key component of any thesis. Try not to view this as part of the overall assignment. If possible, try and view it as a fun thing to do; a means of laying down some guidelines. I get that burying yourself in paperwork might not be the way you would choose to spend your weekends but trust me, doing this now will pay dividends later.
